Jay Anthony Gonzales
Philippines
Jay Anthony Gonzales is a visual artist from the Philippines, specifically based in Manila, Philippines, who was born in Manila in 1979. He's recognized for his diverse artistic output, primarily in painting and mixed media, with a notable presence in digital art.

"The Lost Center," highlighting a crisis in art and the environment. It suggests that art should be a way to explore philosophical questions, connect with the source of creativity, and foster global communication for a better future.

Green Field
Acrylic (glow in the dark) on canvas
10x14 inches 2008
This painting captures the quiet tension between nature and the remnants ofhuman civilization. The vast, untouched green fields and serene mountainsstand in contrast to the decaying, abandoned vehicle in the foreground—asymbol of our fading presence and the disconnection between humanity andthe natural world. In line with The Lost Center theme, this work reflects the crisis of bothenvironment and artistic soul. The rusting car, once a tool of progress, now liesforgotten amidst nature’s calm resilience. It represents how far we havestrayed from our original harmony with the earth, and how civilization has leftbehind more ruin than renewal.Creating this piece is my way of questioning: Where do we stand now ascreators and stewards of the planet? It is a silent plea to rediscover the centerwe’ve lost—not just in art, but in our relationship with nature and one another.May this painting invite reflection, spark dialogue, and call for a return tobalance in both our environment and our values.

Leisure Time
Oil on canvas / 61x76cm / 2024
Set in the tranquil Singapore Botanic Gardens, “The Leisure Time” captures a serene moment where humans and nature coexist in quiet harmony. In today’s fast-paced, concrete world, such green spaces have become rare sanctuaries — reminders of what we’ve lost in the pursuit of progress. This work reflects the need to reconnect with nature and rediscover our “lost Center”: a place of rest, reflection, and renewal.

낯선 숲의 물비늘
sumuk collage/ 45.7x53.2/ 2025
I visually capture fragments of sensation lost in an unfamiliar world. The fish swimming through the dense jungle of opaque time and emotion in this world represent shards of memory and feeling, or pieces of identity. Their presence—fish navigating not through water but through a "strange forest"—suggests the anxiety and rhythm of survival experienced by beings living in an illogical and dissonant environment. I call this sense of dislocation the "sensation of the outsider," and I have depicted the world it constructs. The fish in my work embody the way foreign emotions drift within me; they are a visualization of the fluidity of perception—confusing yet beautiful. Ultimately, they represent the persistence of vitality even within unfamiliar surroundings, and the traces of psychological resistance and acceptance as one seeks balance within that space.

Door
ink wash painting/200cm X 120cm / 2019
As a symbol of both physical and psychological boundaries, the door separates the inner from the outer world, while also metaphorizing the modern mind’s closure and voyeuristic desire. The shadow on the stairs and the figure standing inside the door seem to engage in a silent dialogue— curious about each other’s worlds, yet unable to truly reach one another due to an invisible barrier. This precisely mirrors the contradiction of contemporary people in social interactions: craving connection while fearing vulnerability. Though the "door" isolates, it also offers an opportunity to gaze upon oneself and others. When people confront this alienation and acknowledge the universality of loneliness, they may, with a more inclusive gaze, melt the icy walls of their hearts. The shadows inside and outside the door complete a spiritual dialogue through their mutual gaze, implying that in the face of loneliness, reconciliation begins with the awareness of shared humanity: we all stand on this side and the other side of the door, searching for the light of understanding.

The Colors of Autumn
Chinese painting\92cm×139cm\, 2024
The main body of the work is densely distributed white flowers in the middle
and lower right corner, depicted in detail. The background features vertical
stripes that highlight the flowers. The butterflies dancing in the upper left and
upper right corners create a contrast with the stationary flowers, evenly
distributed and achieving visual balance. The colors are mainly light ink and
white, with flowers forming a sharp contrast with the background. The
variation of ink color highlights the three-dimensional effect of flowers, with
butterfly ink being slightly heavier and emphasizing the form. Using
meticulous brushwork techniques, the lines are delicate and smooth, outlining
the contours and veins of the petals. By using this technique, the colors of the
petals naturally transition, increasing realism and conveying a peaceful and
natural atmosphere. The picture is peaceful and serene.

I’m a multidisciplinary artist from Hong Kong, now based in Toronto, Canada. Growing up in Hong Kong’s blend of Eastern and Western cultures shaped my artistic vision, allowing me to merge both worlds in my work. Primarily self-taught in painting, my transition into design was a natural extension of my passion for art. Mastering perspective in painting helped me excel as an interior designer, with notable projects including work for AT&T, General Electric in Hong Kong, and the Scarborough Board of Education in Canada. As a designer, I shape spaces, and as a painter, I capture moments—two roles that complement each other in how they convey ideas visually. Since retiring from full-time design, I’ve focused on watercolor and ink painting and am a member of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area Ink Concept Association. My studio in Markham, ON, will open next year. Let me show you the world through my eyes.

“This is Home” is a heartfelt reminder that home isn’t just ours—it’s shared amongst all living beings. This work speaks to the silent suffering caused by human impact, urging us to protect what we all call home. Through art, we’re inspired to reflect, feel, and act for a more compassionate, sustainable world. This painting shows a frightened, tearful dog — abandoned, yet still hoping — confronting us with a silent plea. “This is Home” is a call to restore compassion as our shared community.

My work is not about perfection—it’s about presence. My art is rooted in presence, energy, and emotional truth. I use the human body as both subject and surface—merging bodypaint, photography, and performance into visual works that breathe. For me, the body is not just a canvas—it’s a collaborator. A living being carrying stories, tension, strength, and sensitivity.I work fast, intuitively, often with limited time or light, guided by emotion more than perfection. The process is intimate, instinctual, and often deeply personal—between me and the person in front of me.This series is part of a larger vision called “ICONIC”: a collection of portraits that aim to capture presence rather than performance. I want to portray individuals who carry power in their energy—activists, artists, rebels, survivors—people like Lady Gaga, whose essence reaches beyond fashion or fame. Not icons in the commercial sense, but in the emotional one: unforgettable, unfiltered, and human. My background as a designer and art director shapes my aesthetic, but my real drive comes from something deeper—a resistance to numbness and a longing for truth. I don’t want to create pretty images. I want to create emotional imprints that stay with you.

Lamentations
Linen paper, 70 x 100 cm, 2025
Sadness is the elemental substance of the soul. In a world seething with selfishness, inhumanity, deceitand disparities, many an artist often perceives negatives like despair, indecision and dark realities to bring up the quintessence of mundane existence. Through my works, “ Lamentations “ seeks to explore the enigma of existence focusing “ The Lost Center “. The influence of the darker side and the associated agony of the present environment and humanity are prominent in my works. Imbibing lamentation of the hapless, vacillation of the present and emptiness of the future. Trying to convey this existential angst in the stark lines, sharp contours and contrasting spaces to encapsulate the conflicts and contradictions in the world that affect “ Art and Environment “.
