Dr. Meena Baya is a national and international acclaimed painter andprintmaker who hails from Rajasthan state of India. Her painting is a poetry in visual form having a stylised medley of human andvarious elements of nature. Her vibrant symbolic painting through soft anddelicate textures and layers create a novel visual vocabulary that expressesher childlike innocence and keen observations. Her palette is innovative andcomplex. Her paintings reflect her keen sensitivity to the natural world whichis all inclusive, giving her fluid perception of the tiniest of the being. Hermasterful fusion of realism which abstraction weave images that take us intorealm where we feel its powerful visceral impact. She has been exhibiting her paintings for over last 30 years in India andabroad having both solo and group exhibitions.She has also won a number of awards and fellowships that include Rajasthanstate award, fellowship by ministry of culture government of India, researchgrant from national Lalit kala academy, fellowship by British council and artcouncil of Wales, UK. Adding to her artistic contributions she has broadcastedart talks and her paintings have been used as illustrations in India today andother nation level reputed magazines. She continues her art practice to further expand her visual language.

This dialectical relationship can bedeconstructed through three core thematic axes that link the symbolism ofthe "Gnawa Master" to the duality of "the Sun" and "the Child": 1. The Journey of Consciousness and Transition (From the Absolute to Manifestation) The Sun as a Symbol of the Absolute and the Source: In Sufi and cosmicphilosophies, the "Sun" represents the primordial source of light, the ultimatetruth, and the supreme spiritual energy that permeates the universe. The Child as a Symbol of Onset and Purity: The "Child" embodies the stage ofinitial wonder, innate purity, and a readiness to receive knowledge. It is theentity beginning its exploratory journey through life, illuminated by the sun'slight. The Painting as a Bridge Between Them: The "Gnawa Master" in AyoubElmoudden's painting embodies the state of a spiritual mediator. Through thetrance of Sufi music, he absorbs the universe's higher energy (the light of thesun/the transcendent spirit) and translates it into primitive, pure rhythms andmelodies that mirror the innocence and instinct of the "Child." He representsthe eternal return to spiritual childhood and primordial purity through thegateway of mysticism. 2. Chromatic Structure: The Duality of Light and Genesis The Presence of the Sun (The Radiant Background): Despite the dominance ofblue, the swirling brushstrokes bursting with bright yellow, vibrant green, andwhite in the background—and within the core of the Qraqeb—reflect the heatof the "Sun" as a kinetic and sonic force. The Presence of the Child (Primitive Expression): The red headpiece (Chachia)adorned with white cowrie shells, combined with expressive lines that vergeon artistic spontaneity, echoes elements of Naïve or raw art (Art Naïf). Thisstylistic choice directly connects to the spirit of the "Child," who perceives theworld with a visual clarity unburdened by rigid academic rules. 3. Mystical Trance as a Continuous Rebirth In Gnawa culture and Sufism in general, the Jadhba (trance) or Wajd (ecstasy)is considered a major cathartic process. The individual enters a state of self-annihilation regarding their earthly ego, only to emerge "newborn." Here, the circle becomes complete: From the Sun (the source of energy,cosmos, and heat that drives the night of the trance) to the Child (the purifiedhuman being who emerges from the ritual chants cleansed—a peaceful childwho has reclaimed his original nature and inner peace).

Composition and Mixed-Media Technique The artwork stands out immediately for its vibrant, almost raw expressionisticstyle, where textures play a pivotal role. When I stand in my studio, "the sun" represents the absolutebeginning—the raw, blinding energy that sparks all life, all color, and allcreation on our planet. It’s magnificent, but it's also massive and distant.My job as an artist is to catch that immense light and channel it down to thescale of "the boy." To me, the boy represents the future, but he also represents vulnerability. Heis a reminder of why we are making this art in the first place. We aren't justpainting pretty landscapes or sculpting abstract warnings about climatechange; we are trying to preserve human innocence. Every brushstroke ortexture I use is an attempt to translate the massive, chaotic environmentalshifts happening under our sun into something intimate, emotional, anddeeply personal—something a child can look at and understand. Participating in BIEAF2026 feels less like a traditional exhibition and more likea global collective exhale. "Generations" – portrait sculptures made from a larger-than-life model. Theyare part of a larger project. All the individuals are frozen in time in the samestatic arrangement. In this frozen similarity, they build a form of group unity inthe representation, while simultaneously preserving individual diversity. Eachof the portrayed individuals, despite their apparent genotype of age and thesocio-geographical conditions of adolescence, is essentially interpreteddifferently as one delves deeper. This is evident in the sculptural tension oftheir facial features, in the gaze that engages with the viewer, in the silence oftheir lips.

Tell us about BIEAF2026 'From Sun To Boy' : Every artistic practice possesses a genealogy that precedes technique. Beforecraft comes an education of perception—the ability to pause long enough torecognize that reality contains more layers than it first reveals. Atardecer en el corazón emerges from this formative experience. Rather thandepicting a landscape or preserving a memory, the work investigates howlight shapes perception and how moments of contemplation continue toinhabit us long after they have disappeared. Its origin lies in an intimate ritual shared with my mother. Each sunsetsuspended the rhythm of everyday life, opening a space where light, color, andshadow transformed an ordinary moment into an act of contemplation. Overtime, what began as her invitation became mine. It was there thatcontemplation ceased to be observation and became a form of knowledge. The painting does not illustrate that experience; it extends the conditions thatmade it possible. Powdered charcoal, pigments, resin, and layered material accumulationsconstruct a surface where transformation remains inscribed. Charcoal appearsnot as a symbol of darkness but as the residue of transformation itself. Matterbecomes an active field of perception, continuously altered by the incidenceof light. As illumination shifts across the surface, the work changes with it,ensuring that no encounter is ever identical, just as memory itself is neverfixed. Here, the sun is not treated as an iconographic subject but as the conditionthat makes perception possible. It is not the image of the sun that matters, butits capacity to reveal matter, shape attention, and awaken consciousnessthrough the act of seeing. As a Puerto Rican woman, my practice contributes to the ongoing evolution ofmaterial abstraction, extending a tradition historically shaped bypredominantly male voices through a language rooted in contemplation,perception, and transformation. In doing so, I seek to expand the possibilitiesof abstraction as a space where materiality, memory, and lived experienceconverge beyond inherited narratives. The work does not preserve a sunset; it preserves the origin of a way ofseeing. What once existed as an intimate ritual now finds a new form of existencethrough painting. Rather than offering a personal narrative, the work invitesthe viewer to inhabit a threshold where light, materiality, memory, andperception converge, transforming an intimate experience into a sharedhuman experience.

Artist's Introduction : Being a painter whose professional expertise is in the fields of Mathematicsand Cybernetics is not a common profile. But it is my case indeed. This givesme an unusual perspective when I am proposing and defining my work. Myinterpretation of the environment is deeply affected by the criteria shaped bymy formal education. Abstract art allows me to take a deep look andexperiment inside any existing reality. It is not only a tool I use to look underthe skin of a creature or under the surface of an object, but it is also a path tolook above them all. Abstract art, for me, is not just a simple instrument todescribe what is hidden by the boundaries of life and by the mattersurrounding me, but it allows me to recreate those boundaries, throughimagination, beyond the limits of my sight and thoughts. My work has continued from welding scrap metal objects to terracotta made by molding clay and firing it, photo collage made by attaching photographs to everyday objects, environmental sculptures, land art, and natural ecology works. In these various changes in style, the Word has been consistently embodied, and after the period of proclamation and testimony, it has appeared as a dialectical work of truth, and as practical and participatory art. I call the fruits of this work ‘logos-ism’ sculpture, and I will select several works standing on that horizon and exhibit them in line with the theme of the 2025 BIEAF, the loss of the center. I see that at some point, my sculptures have been considering the environment and communication, growing in size and weight, but losing depth of consciousness. It would be a reward and a joy if my work could be remembered as a challenge to and reversal of the frivolity, loss of soul, and absence of truth that contemporary sculptures have.

개인 작업에서 금속과 유약, 자연의 색감, 일상에서 발견한 기억과 감정을 변하지 않는 아름다운 색으로 표현하고자 한다..예술교육 현장에서 초등학생과 청소년, 성인, 어르신을 대상으로 금속공예·은공예·칠보공예 수업을 운영해 왔다. 참여자가 자신의 생각과 경험을 작품으로 표현하고,직접 만들고 완성하는 과정에서 성취감과 자신감을 느낄 수 있도록 돕는 것을 중요하게 생각한다. 또한 지역의 자연환경과 생활문화, 세대의 기억을 예술 활동과 연결하여, 지역 안에서 예술이 사람과 사람을 잇는 매개가 될 수 있는 교육을 실천하고 있다.
앞으로도 공예의 손맛과 느린 제작의 가치를 바탕으로, 지역의 자연과 사람들의 이야기를 작품으로 기록하고 다양한 세대가 함께 참여할 수 있는 예술교육 활동을 지속해 나가고자 한다.

송도해수욕장이 자리한 부산 서구는 산과 바다가 가까이 어우러져, 자연과 함께 일상을 누릴 수 있는 곳이다. 이곳에서 자란 아이들은 바다를 바라보며 자연의 소중함을 배우고, 그 아름다움을 지키고자 하는 마음을 키워 간다.
작품은 서구에 사는 소년들이 직접 만든 종이배를 타고 여름 바다를 즐기던 모습을담고 있다. 이는 우리 가족에게 오래된 소중한 추억이다. 아이들은 ‘종이배 만들기’대회에 마지막 참가자로 참가하게 되어 재료가 넉넉하지 않은 상황에서도 아이들스스로가 만든 종이배로 예선 조1위라는 좋은 결과를 얻었다. 젖은 종이배로 결승에는 참여하지 못했지만, 바다와 한몸이 되어 시원한 여름을 마음껏 즐기던 아이들의모습은 무척 대견하고 기특했다.
이 작품에는 자연에서 마음껏 뛰놀며 성장하는 아이들의 기백과 바다를 품고 살아가는 서구의 따뜻한 풍경을 담고자 하였다.

Drawing on my experiencesworking with children with developmental disabilities, multicultural families,and migrant workers, I seek to expand the possibilities of Art as Therapythrough the photographic medium.

**Four Directions, Four Elements, One Source** This work explores the shared language that exists between humanity'sdiverse belief systems and the immutable cycles of nature. The geometricaxes radiating from the center represent the four cardinal directions and theperpetual transformation of the four classical elements—fire, air, water, andearth. The triangular forms are not merely compositional devices; theyfunction as symbolic gateways, expressing movement, ascension, andrenewal. The stippled textures create fields of light that dissolve the boundarybetween the visible and the invisible, matter and consciousness. The reference to the **four religions** and the **four concepts of divinity**does not seek to privilege one belief over another. Instead, it reflects theuniversal truth that different civilizations have responded to the sameexistential questions through different symbols and narratives. While names,rituals, and traditions vary, the search for light, life, death, harmony, andtranscendence remains fundamentally the same. The central ascending formtherefore represents not a specific deity, but the abstract principle of creationshared across spiritual traditions. The four elements are understood not only as physical substances but also asarchetypal forces that shape human existence—thought, intuition, body, andspirit. Each direction opens toward a different beginning, yet every lineultimately returns to the same center, suggesting that separation is often anillusion created by perspective. Through geometry, this artwork proposes a universal visual language in whichlight becomes consciousness and empty space becomes the origin ofcreation. Rather than inviting the viewer into a single religious or philosophical framework, it encourages contemplation of the collective memory thatunderlies all cultures. For me, art is not simply an aesthetic object; it is a silentfield where the ancient dialogue between humanity and the cosmos can berenewed. By bringing together symbolic structures from nature andspirituality, this work seeks to reveal unity within diversity. 검은 춤 시리즈에서는 야생 들풀(잡초), 그들 생의 마지막 순간의 움직임을 포착하여인간 삶의 모습을 투영하고자 했다. 겨울의 야생식물의 실루엣은 작업의 모티브이자 작업 동기가 되었다. 빛을 등진 채 다음 생을 위해 스러지는 그들의 굴곡지고 각진모습에서 느껴진, 처연한 아름다움을 옮기고자 했다. 그것이 만들어내는 검은 실루엣이 세상 무엇보다도 아름다웠는데 그 아름다움은 꽃집 안의 풍성하고 화려한 꽃들이 주는 것과는 다른 것이었다. 바위도 들어 올릴 것만 같던 그들의 봄을 시작으로,겨울은 온몸의 물기를 다 빼고 땅으로 돌아가는 시기다. 모든 것을 쥐던 손아귀의 힘을 빼고 다음 세대를 위한 ‘멸(滅)’. 이 섭리 위의 야생식물로부터 ‘우리네 삶도 그러해야 하지 않은가’, 한 수 배운다. 말라비틀어져 금방 부스러질 것 같이 가볍지만, 형상은 호방하고 온몸으로 사계절의 풍파, 즉 따가운 햇볕과 칼부림 같은 겨울바람을 버텨낸 것이 사군자의 절개와 다르지 않음을 역설한다. 이 모습은 피골이 상접한 듯 말랐지만 단단한 근육을 품은 지혜로운 노인의 눈빛을 떠오르게 한다. 그 섭리를 화폭에 옮기지 않을 수 없었다.

Faisal Mateen is a distinguished and acclaimed artist from Bhopal, India, whohas dedicated over 40 years to the world of art. He is the founder of “Art for Cause” and the creator of the popular fictional cartoon character “Surma Bhopali.” With a deep love for his city, Faisal has created more than 500 paintingspreserving the fading heritage of Bhopal. Through his artwork, he aims tointroduce the next generation to the cultural legacy that is graduallydisappearing — a mission that defines his artistic journey. He has taught art at the prestigious Oak Grove School in Mussoorie and iscurrently serving as an art teacher at MSB Bhopal. Faisal has showcased hisartworks in over 50 group and solo exhibitions, along with 30 onlineexhibitions during the COVID pandemic, including two shows at the renownedJehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai. During the pandemic, he also organized fivecharity art auctions to support people in need. Faisal Mateen worked as an illustrator and artist with Mr. Neelesh Misra (thewell-known film lyricist) for the “Yaad Sheher” project. He was honored withthe “Faqr-e-Bhopal” award by the esteemed Begums of Bhopal at Pari Bazaar3. He has also served as a judge in various art competitions, including the Bhopal Literature and Art Festival, the NABARD and LIC paintingcompetitions, and many others. His exhibitions have travelled beyond India to the USA, UK, Romania, Iran,Egypt, Peru, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Dubai, and several othercountries. Special television programs about his art have been broadcast onChannel 7 (Egypt), Doordarshan, and ETV India, and Fargad Magazine (SaudiArabia) featured a dedicated article on his work in 2024. Through “Art for Cause,” he is connected with more than 4,000 artists acrossthe world who use art as a medium to promote global peace. Under thisinitiative, he has also organized two physical exhibitions in Bhopal. His recentexhibition, “Operation Sindoor,” was curated by him in collaboration with theIndian Army in June 2025 at Swaraj Gallery, where artists from 15 countriesparticipated.

Faisal Mateen is a distinguished and acclaimed artist from Bhopal, India, whohas dedicated over 40 years to the world of art. He is the founder of “Art for Cause” and the creator of the popular fictional cartoon character “Surma Bhopali.” With a deep love for his city, Faisal has created more than 500 paintingspreserving the fading heritage of Bhopal. Through his artwork, he aims tointroduce the next generation to the cultural legacy that is graduallydisappearing — a mission that defines his artistic journey. He has taught art at the prestigious Oak Grove School in Mussoorie and iscurrently serving as an art teacher at MSB Bhopal. Faisal has showcased hisartworks in over 50 group and solo exhibitions, along with 30 onlineexhibitions during the COVID pandemic, including two shows at the renownedJehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai. During the pandemic, he also organized fivecharity art auctions to support people in need. Faisal Mateen worked as an illustrator and artist with Mr. Neelesh Misra (thewell-known film lyricist) for the “Yaad Sheher” project. He was honored withthe “Faqr-e-Bhopal” award by the esteemed Begums of Bhopal at Pari Bazaar3. He has also served as a judge in various art competitions, including the Bhopal Literature and Art Festival, the NABARD and LIC paintingcompetitions, and many others. His exhibitions have travelled beyond India to the USA, UK, Romania, Iran,Egypt, Peru, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Dubai, and several othercountries. Special television programs about his art have been broadcast onChannel 7 (Egypt), Doordarshan, and ETV India, and Fargad Magazine (SaudiArabia) featured a dedicated article on his work in 2024. Through “Art for Cause,” he is connected with more than 4,000 artists acrossthe world who use art as a medium to promote global peace. Under thisinitiative, he has also organized two physical exhibitions in Bhopal. His recentexhibition, “Operation Sindoor,” was curated by him in collaboration with theIndian Army in June 2025 at Swaraj Gallery, where artists from 15 countriesparticipated.

Fedia Lahmar, born on January 7, 1973, in Paris, is a Tunisian painter. Shestudied at ITAAUT, specializing in painting, and graduated in the class of 1995.She holds a PhD in Art Technologies and is an assistant professor at theNational School of Architecture and Urbanism in Tunis.Since 2001, she has regularly participated in group exhibitions. In November2022, she held a solo exhibition titled Réminiscence and the latest soloexhibition, April 2026 titled La chaise in praesencia. Her work focusesprimarily on the representation of the human body as a means to expressvarious emotional states.

Working in the form of a triptych stems from a desire to explore the idea oftransitioning from one atmosphere to another. Figures and branches mergeand intertwine to form a single entity. The human silhouettes, almost ethereal—sometimes in motion, sometimes still—become intertwined with branchingforms that evoke growth. In this work, the figures on the right and the leftresemble one another and appear to be connected. The triptych thussuggests an inner journey, expressing a desire to reconnect and become onewith nature. Rather than being realistic, the forms are reimagined andsimplified, allowing emotion to take precedence.
